Im Jahr
1997, ein Monat nachdem Judy Rafat in Englewood auf Einladung von Jon Faddis auf dem Memorial Concert anlässlich
des 80. Geburtstages von Dizzy Gillespie gesungen hat, erfüllte sich der Traum einer CD mit Kompositionen von Dizzy Gillespie.
Judy Rafat sagt:
"... during recording it was obvious to all, that the spirit of Dizzy was with us in the studio ..."
Die Tribute-CD mit dem Titel
"CON ALMA" auf der sie ausnahmslos Kompositionen – teilweise mit eigenen Texten -
von Dizzy Gillespie singt und ihr Ausnahmetalent eindrucksvoll unter Beweis stellt, hat sie ihrem Freund und Mentor gewidmet.
Die Liste der für den Erfolg durch ihre Mitwirkung mitverantwortlichen Musiker liest sich wie das "who is who" der
Jazzwelt: Kenny Barron, Frank Wess, Rufus Reid, Ignacio Berroa, Claudio Roditi, Mike Longo, Paquito d´Rivera sowie John Lee.
In den Notes zu der CD schrieb Slide Hampton:
"Here is a true voice coming straight from the heart ... the compositions
of Dizzy Gillespie require a high quality of singing. Judy has passed it with excellent intonation and phrasing.
What a range, what a precision! She really sounds like an instrument. She sings of a theme close to her heart – love and
support of oppressed people because of prejudice of skin colour or nationality.".
